Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

You don’t need any specific educational background or experience to take any of our workshops with the exception of our Advanced ADR and Applied ADR Workshops.

Participants in our workshops have a range of education and experience. Our workshops are designed for anyone who deals with conflict, manages staff, or has to negotiate agreements of any kind.  Our participants include HR professionals, government officials, lawyers, business people, labour/employment relations specialists, health care professionals, educators, consultants, law enforcement personnel, customer service representatives, people who want to be professional mediators, and any others who deal with conflict or negotiate in their work or personal lives.  The workshops are designed to help people build skills and develop new tools, regardless of their experience.

The Stitt Feld Handy Group workshops are accredited by several groups and organizations including various Human Resources Professional Associations in Canada and the United States, the Law Society of Ontario among others.  Please visit our accreditations page for other accreditations and for more details.  We will also work with you to complete any self-reporting requirements that may be necessary for you to obtain your professional development credits.

At the end of the ADR Workshop, Advanced ADR Workshop, Applied ADR Workshop, Become a Powerful Negotiator Workshop, the Dealing With Difficult People Workshop and the Effective Decision Making Workshop you will receive a certificate of completion from Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University.   At the completion of the two online courses (negotiation and difficult conversations) you will also receive a certificate of completion from Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, which you can print yourself.

The attendance varies with each workshop.  In general, the range is from 20 to 30. We frequently divide the large group into smaller groups for some exercises, discussions and debriefs.

All of our instructors are professional negotiation consultants, mediators, coaches, course designers and facilitators.  Once you choose the workshop and the date, you will see which instructors are scheduled for that workshop.  You can read more about our instructors on our faculty page.  In addition, we have professional negotiators and mediators who provide feedback during the role plays in our ADR workshops and the Become a Powerful Negotiator workshop.

The fee includes everything you need to participate in the workshop.  It includes all of the materials for the workshop, access to resources during and after the workshop, access to the instructors to answer any questions after the workshop, any coaching provided, and your certificate of completion.

The Alternative Dispute Resolution workshops teach skills and techniques in negotiation and dispute resolution.  Therefore, these skills can be helpful when seeking employment in any area in which you may be required to negotiate agreements or resolve conflicts.  Our participants have gone on to use the skills in their work as human resource professionals, lawyers, managers, salespeople, project managers, union representatives, nurses, teachers, ombuds, engineers, principals, accountants, supervisors and many other roles.

Some people take the workshops with the goal of becoming professional mediators now or in the future. It can take time to develop a practise as a professional mediator and people’s success at finding mediation work often depends on whom they know (their connections), their prior experience, and the time invested in building a mediation practice. Read our blog post for more information on getting work in the dispute resolution field.

The cost of a customized workshop varies depending on the size of group and the number of training days.  We can work with you and your organization to create a workshop that fits your specific needs.  For pricing and other information, please email us at contact@adr.ca or call us at (416) 307-0000 (visit our contact page for a list of all international toll-free numbers).

Absolutely.  One of our instructors would be happy to speak to you and answer any questions that you may have regarding the training. Please email us at contact@adr.ca or call us at (416) 307-0000 (visit our contact page for a list of all international toll-free numbers).

You take the online courses at your own pace and can log on and off as many times as you want.

The courses are made up of modules, which are fully interactive.  In each component, you will be presented with a scenario that includes animated characters. The characters will begin the conversation or negotiation. At a certain point, they will pause and then you get to select how you would respond from certain options. The characters will then respond based on your selection and you get to decide your next step. The conversation will then unfold based on your choices.

There is very little to read and nothing to type in. The online Negotiation course typically takes between 5-8 hours to complete and the Difficult Conversations Course typically takes between 3-5 hours to complete.

The Stitt Feld Handy Group provides training and services in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, Negotiation, Dealing With Difficult People, Effective Decision Making, Customer Service and Workplace/Corporate Coaching.  We have conducted training in Canada, USA, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa and have trained over 60,000 people.  Many Stitt Feld Handy Group Workshops are conducted in joint venture with Dalhousie University, Schulich Law School and participants receive certificates from the Law School upon completion of the courses.  Our trainers are leading alternative dispute resolution experts, mediators, arbitrators, coaches, and negotiation consultants.

Our live virtual and in-person training formats share the same commitment to quality and interactive learning through:

  • Smaller class sizes for personalized attention
  • Breakout sessions for engaging, hands-on practice
  • Access to videos and handouts for continued growth
  • Live coached feedback during select role plays
  • Interactive, dynamic sessions that bring real-world scenarios to life

You might find the in-person setting ideal for direct interaction with other participants and the opportunity to practise the skills in-person while online courses offer the convenience of learning from anywhere, without the time and cost of travel. Both formats are designed to deliver essential skills for a lasting impact.
